Adventurous Escapes

Shetland Island Scotland

I biked 18 miles through the mountains of Shetland Island. It was a rainy, scenic ride. There were rolling hills everywhere and nearly no trees.

Must See

Scallaway was the original capital of Scotland. Now, Lerwick is the capital, located on the coast. The castle is currently under repair but appears to be in good shape overall for being built in the 1600s.

Solo Travelers

As a female solo traveler, Shetland offers a captivating and safe destination for exploration. The islands’ serene landscapes, from windswept cliffs to pristine beaches, provide a sense of tranquility and adventure. Roaming through charming villages like Lerwick, the locals were friendly and welcoming, making me feel at ease.

Discovering Shetland’s Norse heritage added a layer of fascination to my journey. Exploring ancient ruins, like Jarlshof and immersing myself in local festivals allowed me to connect with the rich history and culture of the islands.

While enjoying the picturesque scenery and wildlife, like adorable Shetland ponies and seabird colonies, I always felt secure in this remote corner of the world. The warmth of the Shetland community complemented the sense of independence and freedom that solo travel brings.

Overall, Shetland provided me with a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and a sense of adventure, making it an exceptional destination for female solo travelers.
